George Lyon, Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland, has urged fellow MEPs to reject the proposal to cap payments to farmers in the vote on the CAP report drafted by German MEP Albert Dess. The report is due to be voted on Thursday 23rd June.
Commenting ahead of the vote, Mr Lyon said:
"This is a critical vote towards reform of the Common Agriculture policy and it is vital for Scottish farmers that the proposal to cap payments for bigger farmers is rejected.
"Scotland's farms are amongst the biggest in Europe and any proposal to limit payments on the basis of farm size will hit Scottish farmers hardest.
"The move to cap payments by both the Commission and the Parliament is downright discrimination and would leave Scotland trying to compete on a playing field that is tilted against them.
"The UK government has already come out strongly against this idea and I will be urging as many MEPs as possible to vote against the proposal."
