Commenting on Friday's announcement by DFDS of the withdrawal of passenger service from the Rosyth - Zeebrugge route, Rosyth Liberal Democrat councillor Keith Legg said:
"DFDS' announcement, whilst disappointing, is in many ways unsurprising.
Since the service was originally launched by Superfast, the journey time from Rosyth to Zeebrugge has steadily increased to 20 hours, whilst the fares have, until only very recently, remained stubbornly high. The route was always going to compete for traffic from the established routes via Hull and DFDS' own route via Newcastle, and from my own experience of booking ferries the overall cost often outweighed the convenience of travel.
I remain certain that there is a market for a direct passenger link to Europe from Scotland, but it needs to be marketed properly and have the same level of promotion as the numerous routes from England. I'm pleased that DFDS are not ditching the route altogether, and I am hopeful that at some point in the future the passenger ferry will return to Rosyth."
