NHS Fife has announced today that it will be implementing its full contingency plan today until the end of the week due to a shortage of medical staff overnight.
Jim Tolson MSP commented "It was extremely disappointing to hear that this situation is going to continue for the moment. The contingency plans were first implemented in May this year and we find ourselves still in the same situation two months later. Contingency plans were designed to deal with emergency situations such as short term staff shortages not for long term use! This situation is putting an increasing burden on staff at QMH.
I will be writing to the Chief Executive to express my concerns this week. The contingency plans were drawn up to deal with the reduction in the hours medical staff can work due to the European Working Time Regulations and increasing specialisation. We must ensure that NHS Fife doesn't end up in this situation on an increasingly regular basis."
