Kingdom MP Willie Rennie has criticised the Government after figures published today revealed that unemployment in Fife and around Scotland rose again last month, despite the UK technically moving out of recession at the end of 2009.
In the Kingdom, the number of people claiming unemployment benefits in January 2010 rose to almost 2900 - this figure more than 16% higher than in the same month in 2009. Across Scotland as a whole, unemployment rose by nearly 1% over the last quarter.
Commenting, Mr Rennie said:
'While Ministers claim that they are investing to protect jobs, it would appear that this protection does not extend to people north of the border.
'Far from making a real difference, the Government has failed to provide businesses in the Kingdom with the support they need to keep people in work.
'It is hard to see how the Prime Minister can claim credit for any economic recovery while the number of people losing their jobs in Scotland continues to grow.'
