Local MP Willie Rennie has called on Government Ministers in Edinburgh and London to work together to ensure that people in the Kingdom can benefit from the boiler scrappage programme launched this week. Under the new arrangements as they stand, eligible households in England will receive grants of £400 towards the cost of a new boiler.
The boiler scrappage scheme was announced as part of the UK Government's Pre-Budget Report (PBR) in December and it is thought that up to 125,000 households could be eligible for financial support. It has been estimated that the scheme could save as much carbon annually as would be achieved by taking 45,000 cars off the road.
Commenting, Mr Rennie said:
'During the Pre-Budget Report we were faced with the slightly absurd spectacle of a Scottish Chancellor proudly announcing details of a boiler scrappage scheme that at present is not available to people living in Scotland.
'If this new scheme really is an important part of the UK's strategy to reduce carbon emissions, it is essential that Ministers in Edinburgh and London work together to ensure that resources are made available to extend the scrappage programme across Scotland.
'This new scheme will not only benefit the environment but will also help homeowners reduce their energy bills significantly. It is unacceptable that people in the Kingdom should be excluded from a programme that could save them a substantial amount of money and help keep them warm this winter.'
