MP challenges Fife Labour politicians to stand up for Fife amid Glasgow Labour claims of east coast bias

December 16, 2009 12:30 PM

West Fife's MP Willie Rennie has challenged local Labour politicians to fight for Fife following Labour claims that there is an east-west funding split in Scotland. Glasgow's Labour Leader Steven Purcell claims that the east coast is getting more cash than the west.

"Glasgow needs investment but so does Fife," said the MP. "We need more affordable homes, funds for desperately needed new schools and a by-pass for Rosyth and that's just for West Fife. Because of Labour's recession and the SNP funding cuts Fife is see its budget slashed over the next few years. That could mean critical reductions in vital social work, school and transport services.

"It's unfortunate that Labour seem more interested in pleading for Glasgow than seeking new funds for all of Scotland's needs.

"This is not the first attack on the east coast from Labour. I am very disappointed that Labour have chosen to kindle division and discontent in Scotland at a time when we all need to combine forces to beat the recession.

"Now is the time for local Labour politicians to make the case for Fife's needs as remaining silent at this time could result in Fife losing out. I am sure Labour will want to put the record straight, distance themselves from these comments and stand up for the whole of Scotland and not just Glasgow."
