Government complacency on Scotland's economy as depressing as it is predictable says Rennie

December 1, 2009 12:00 PM

Following the release of a report by the Fraser of Allander Institute, which revealed that the Scottish economy is forecast to achieve almost no growth during 2010, West Fife MP Willie Rennie has accused the Government of breathtaking complacency in attempting to revive Scotland's economy and called on them to get Scotland's unemployed back to work.

The country's economy is predicted to face a dip of at least one more quarter of contraction in 2009, and possibly two - meaning a return to recession.

The institute said unemployment was likely to peak next year at 234,000 - 40,000 more than the most recent figure.

Commenting Mr Rennie said:

"The complacency within government about Scotland's economy and the continued growth in the numbers of unemployed people is depressing as it is predictable.

"The government needs to get real about the extent of this problem and put reliable measures in place to combat it. They should be ensuring that job centres are able to help all the people who now call on them for help

"They need to be able to give better help to people in their forties and fifties who are out of work for the first time. These are people who have paid into the system all their lives and who deserve to get decent help now."
