Local MP Willie Rennie has called on the Scottish and UK governments to work together to introduce an immediate economic recovery plan after it was revealed that the increase in unemployment in Dunfermline and West Fife is the highest across the whole of Fife.
Figures released by the government have shown unemployment in West Fife has risen by 50% from 1,668 in November 2008 to 2,515 in 2009.
Mr Rennie has again reiterated his call for the Scottish and UK governments to introduce Vince Cable's economic recovery plan which would include tax cuts for low and middle income households, action to cut energy bills and restrictions on reckless banks
Commenting Mr Rennie said:
"These figures are yet more proof, if it were needed, of the impact of the economic downturn on the Fife economy. There can be no doubt that our economy is shrinking, but what is most concerning is that it seems to be shrinking at a faster rate than other areas.
"Families in Fife are really struggling at the moment and what they need more than anything is the practical support to take the burden away from the weekly struggle to pay their bills.
"Rather than spending their time arguing with the opposition, the Governments in both Scotland and the UK should consider the proposals put forward by the Liberal Democrats to cut energy bills and introduce tax cuts for low and middle income households, which would give people a much needed helping hand before Christmas."
