News that the Government's plans to delay the Carbon Capture Storage competition could threaten investment in Longannet Power Station according to local MP Willie Rennie.
Quizzing the Secretary of State for Energy in the House of Commons, Mr Rennie asked Ed Miliband to give assurances that there would be no further delays to the Government's carbon capture competition, following last month's announcement that Kingsnorth will not be able to meet the 2014 deadline.
Mr Rennie will be writing to Ed Miliband urging him to stick to the 2014 deadline following the Minister's refusal to answer questions over possible delays put to him by both Mr Rennie and the Conservative front bench.
Commenting Mr Rennie said:
"I'm extremely disappointed that the Energy Secretary point blank refused to back the 2014 deadline.
"I'm worried that any further delays will act as huge set back for investment in Longannet. Carbon capture and storage has huge potential locally, particularly as the Forth valley is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions in the UK, with Grangemouth, Mossmorran, Cockenzie, and in particular Longannet.
"The 2014 deadline for the carbon capture pilot is essential if the UK is to meet its 2020 climate change objectives. The Government's delays are because they are obsessed with building Kingsnorth Power Station in England. But that obsession must not be allowed to derail the UK's carbon capture plans and battle with climate change."
