Dunfermline and West Fife MP Willie Rennie has met with John Penman from Lloyds Banking Group to discuss the bank's plans for jobs and support for businesses in West Fife. In a constructive meeting Mr Rennie urged the company to maintain its strong presence in the area and build on the 2500 jobs it already provides in the Rosyth and Dunfermline facilities.
With the HBOS card services centre at Pitreavie, Intelligent Finance and back offices in Rosyth as well as two bank branches in Dunfermline, the company is a major employer in the area.
Although critical of the decision to merge Lloyds TSB with HBOS Mr Rennie was keen to stress that West Fife is a great place to do business and provides employees with a first class reputation. It's speedy transport links to Edinburgh and the airport combined with supportive local agencies and council means that West Fife is a good place for Lloyds to base many of its functions.
Commenting Mr Rennie said:
"As Lloyds continues with the merger process it's a trying time for their employees and an anxious period for the community which has already been hit by job losses at Oceaneering, Cemtron, BAE Systems and others.
"Although I am sure there will be some more job losses I am keen to impress upon Lloyds that West Fife is a good place to do business and that we should be a major base for their functions into the future.
"John Penman was unable to tell me how many job losses there would be and when they would be announced but fully understood that I am keen to be supportive to the company so that Lloyds remains a major employer in the area."
