Minister rejects plea for new support as Rennie highlights SNP incompetence over Forth Crossing

May 19, 2009 3:00 PM

West Fife's MP Willie Rennie has had his plea for a new package of support for the new Forth Crossing rejected by the UK Government.

Speaking in a debate in the House of Commons secured by the West Fife MP, Mr Rennie criticised the SNP Government after their Scottish Futures Trust failed to supply the funding for the bridge.

However, Mr Rennie's request for the UK Government to bail out the Scottish Executive and provide the necessary funding was rejected by Treasury Minister Angela Eagle MP.

Commenting Mr Rennie said:

"The slow pace of progress on this important issue is matched only by the increasing concern in the local community. The longer the process takes, the more that concern grows.

"Two years on from Alex Salmond' so-called patriotic bonds speech not one patriotic Scot have paid a single penny for those bonds. This isn't because we lack patriotic Scots, but because there is a lack of sensible thinking in the SNP.

"If the SNP refuses point blank to use the powers it has within its grasp, we must seek alternative methods because we need that bridge and we need it soon.

"I asked the Treasury Minister to either provide additional financial support or give the Scottish Parliament borrowing powers. I'm disappointed that the Minister has rejected my request.

"I will continue to lobby both Governments to deliver the action that will get our bridge built."
