Unemployment levels in the Kingdom have increased by over 70% since the beginning of 2008, with local MP Willie Rennie attributing the rise to Labour's "economic incompetence".
Over 2,500 people are currently registered as unemployed in Dunfermline and West Fife. Mr Rennie has described Labour's response to the economic crisis as nothing more than "smoke and mirrors" and has accused the Government of failing to take the necessary steps to create jobs.
Mr Rennie believes unemployment will continue to rise in the Kingdom unless real action is taken to lead Britain out of Brown's recession. Willie has given has backing to plans put forward by Vince Cable and the Liberal Democrats to combat the economic decline by investing in a new green economy, cutting taxes to give low and middle income earners help, lower heating bills for pensioners and the most vulnerable and action to stop banks rushing to repossess homes.
Commenting Mr Rennie said:
"For unemployment levels to increase by 73% in just one year tells you all you need to know about how hard the Kingdom has been hit by Brown's recession.
"It's a staggering increase that has contributed to the rising number of businesses going under, homes being lost and families struggling to pay their bills. Unless Labour fundamentally changes the way they are dealing with the recession then we're only going to see more of the same in the upcoming months.
"Labour's response has been nothing more than smoke and mirrors and has only emphasised their economic incompetence. They haven't offered any kind practical action to help create jobs and have instead relied on the kind of meaningless gimmicks trotted out during last weeks budget.
"Vince Cable and the Liberal Democrats have been proved right again and again during the crisis and are the only party with the courage to invest in long term projects and get us out of Brown's recession by growing our economy."
