West Fife MP Willie Rennie has demanded answers from the Ministry of Defence after the Government announced recently their plans for another set of jobs cuts at the Defence Storage and Distribution Agency including the local Defence Munitions Centre at Crombie.
Speaking yesterday in the House of Commons, Mr Rennie asked Minister's to explain their decision to cut jobs during a recession and questioned the wisdom of allowing the Treasury to try and plug a £1.5billion budget gap through redundancies instead of long term efficiency savings.
Commenting Mr Rennie said:
"Unsurprisingly, morale is extremely low at Crombie and news of this latest round of job cuts has come as a real bolt from the blue. It seems more and more likely that the DSDA is facing death by a thousand cuts.
"The Treasury-inspired review seems to be more concerned with raising a quick buck to pay for the billions squandered in Iraq then providing a more efficient service for the MOD.
"The MOD had previously given assurances that the deep water jetty was such a valuable asset that could be used by the Royal Navy's Type 45 Destroyers and the new Carriers that it must be maintained.
"I want answers as to why the MOD was oblivious to the Treasury's proposal to slash jobs at the DSDA. One thing's for certain, it's clear the left hand has no idea what the right one is up to."
