MP Willie Rennie has reacted angrily to the news that Christmas bonus payments for almost 1,500 pensioners in his constituency of Dunfermline and West Fife may not be paid until nearly Easter.
The extra bonus payment is designed to help older people with their winter fuel bills. However, research by the Liberal Democrats has revealed that nearly one in ten older people will be forced to wait until March to receive this payment.
Mr Rennie, who has received complaints from his constituents about the delay, is urging the Government to speed up these payments. He commented:
"These delays are unacceptable, particularly at a time when older people are finding times tough with rising food and fuel bills and falling levels of savings. The delays are also causing confusion, as people simply do not understand why some of their friends have received the money while they have not.
"Paying the bonus three months late is just not good enough and the Government must expedite these payments as a matter of urgency. They should also learn the lessons of this year so next winter these payments are made promptly."
