Commenting on the Rural Affairs and Environment Committee's conclusion that it does not support the SNP Government's proposals on leasing 25% of Scotland's forestry to private investment companies, Liberal Democrat Willie Rennie MP said:
"The Rural Affairs and Environment Committee has hammered the final nail in the coffin of the SNP Government's ill-advised and deeply unpopular forestry plans.
"Under the SNP's plan, woodland sites in the Kingdom, such as those at Valleyfield and at Devilla forest could be sold to private companies to raise a quick buck. Thankfully this idea has been well and truly slammed by the Rural Affairs Committee.
"All that remains now is for the Government to drop these plans so we can get on with the serious business of planting more trees in Scotland.
"This can be done without threatening rural jobs, timber supplies and leisure activities as the SNP have been so intent on doing in recent months."
