Speaking yesterday in the House of Commons, MP for Dunfermline and West Fife Willie Rennie pressed the Justice Minister on the need to establish a refuge for people who have been wrongly imprisoned following the case of constituent Stephen Johnson.
Following Mr Rennie's intervention, Justice Minister David Hanson agreed to meet with him along with Paddy Hill and Gerry Conlon of the Miscarriages of Justice Organisation, to discuss their proposal to give the victims of miscarriages of justice full residential and in-depth support upon leaving prison.
Commenting Mr Rennie said:
"When innocent people such as Stephen Johnson are wrongful imprisoned, it is often a traumatic experience that can scar them for life. However, when they are released they are given little support other than a simple helpline.
"Paddy Hill and Gerry Conlon's proposal to create a refuge for people who are wrongly imprisoned will give these victims the support they need to integrate back into society.
"I am delighted that the Minister has agreed to discuss their proposal in person and I'm hopeful that this will lead to further progress in the campaign for giving these people the refuge they deserve and need."
