Government must pressure Israel to reduce the number of checkpoints in the West Bank-Rennie

January 14, 2009 3:00 PM

Lib Dem Defence team member Willie Rennie MP has called on the Foreign Office to pressurise the Israeli Government to provide relief to the unacceptable conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories on the West Bank by dramatically reducing the number of checkpoints and barriers in the region.

Speaking yesterday in the House of Commons, Mr Rennie pressed home the damaging impact the 600 plus checkpoints, barriers and fences had made upon human rights and economic development in the west bank.

Commenting Mr Rennie said:

"The current crisis in Gaza shows how quickly conflict in the West Bank can escalate into a total humanitarian disaster without proper access for food or aid.

"At the last count, there were more than 600 checkpoints, barriers and fences in the west bank stifling the economic development of the region and undermining the human rights of Palestinians living there.

"It's high time the Government issue real pressure to the Israeli Government to take serious measures to bring to end what are effectively economic sanctions against Palestinians in the West Bank."
