MP Willie Rennie has issued the MOD with a "hands off" Crombie warning after the Defence Storage and Distribution Agency announced a review of current operational efficiency in the wake of Alistair Darling's pre-budget report, leading to fears that the local Defence Munitions Centre could be set for further job losses.
Mr Rennie has called on the Government to refocus the review onto long term efficiency savings instead of compromising service capability by trying to plug a £1.5billion budget gap through redundancies.
"The Government should take its' hands off Crombie. It's been through review after review in the last decade with the latest resulting in 140 jobs being axed. I fear this review is not about real efficiency savings but selling off the family silver to pay for the £billions squandered in Iraq."
"I'm not against investigating new ways of working that may be more efficient, cost less and deliver a better service but I fear that Crombie is facing death by a thousand cuts. We fought off the closure last time by making a powerful case that the deep water jetty was such a valuable MOD asset that it must be maintained. That case has not changed. It may be used by the Royal Navy's Type 45 Destroyers and the new Carriers. It's important that it is retained along with the whole depot. "
"I will be working with the trade unions and the local workforce against any plans to close Crombie."
