MP for Dunfermline and West Fife Willie has given his backing to calls made this week for the Government to give more support to the Post Office to help them modernise.
The independent regulator of postal services, Postcomm, has this week published a report calling on Royal Mail and the Post Office to be run as separate businesses, and for the Post Office to be given a long-term strategy to build confidence in the network and prevent further unplanned closures. Postcomm's report also recommends that partnerships between post offices and local authorities should be developed
Commenting after the report was published, Mr Rennie said:
"What the Post Office needs most of all is clarity. There was far too much uncertainty for far too long over the contract for the Card Account. The Post Office needs to be supported so it can adapt to being a modern 21st century business.
"I fully back the recommendation that the Post Office and Royal Mail should be split into separate businesses. Indeed, this is something the Liberal Democrats have long called for and it makes good sense."
"Postcomm is absolutely right to identify this as an area of opportunity. I am pleased that measures are being taken to examine ways in which Fife Council can work with our local post offices, and I look forward to seeing the outcome of this review."
