Local MP Willie Rennie has welcomed the news that the Post Office is to retain the Post Office Card Account (POCA) contract, in a move that will save 3,000 post offices across the country.
The news was confirmed this afternoon by Work and Pensions Secretary James Purnell and represents a massive victory for the 3,000 holders in West Fife who use the account to collect their benefits or state pension.
Speaking after the announcement was made Mr Rennie said:
"Over 500 people have contacted my office concerned at the government's threat to the Post Office Card Account and I am delighted that they have responded by reissuing the Post Office with the card account.
"Today's announcement is a victory for all the people in Dunfermline and West Fife who have been campaigning to keep the card account with the Post Office, and shows that local campaigning really does work.
"The new Card Account contract is lifeline worth around one billion pounds to the Post Office network which will help maintain this valuable and unique community service.
"However, the fact remains that many more post offices will continue to close as a direct consequence of this Government's policy of removing benefits and other payments from post offices.
"The immediate threat to many post offices may have been averted, but the long-term prospect for many of them remains poor."
