Rennie calls for concerned miners to come forward

October 15, 2008 9:00 AM

Miners who have had money wrongly deducted from their compensation award have been asked to come forward by MP Willie Rennie.

Mr Rennie has advised miners with concerns to contact him. The move comes after some solicitors, who had been making inappropriate deductions whilst handling miners' claims, have recently agreed to pay back the money to the miners.

To date the Legal Complaints Service in England has received in excess of 3,400 miners' complaints and have recovered more than £730,000 on their behalf.

Commenting, Mr Rennie said:

"Miners are owed a huge debt by society and it's unacceptable that some solicitors have taken a cut from their compensation. It's an abuse of trust which must be put right. Even though the Government devised a compensation scheme that involved no risk for the solicitors many of them still decided to take an additional fee from the miners."

"The practice seems to have been widespread in England but I've not heard of any problems in Scotland so far. I would encourage any miners who have had deductions made by their solicitors to contact as soon as possible. Miners should contact me at my Dunfermline office on 01383 841700."
