Local MP Willie Rennie and MSP Jim Tolson are "delighted" that West Fife has bucked the economic decline by recording an increased number of new business start ups. Official figures from the Committee of Scottish Clearing Bankers show that in the first quarter of 2007, the number of start up businesses in Scotland was 8,356. In the first quarter of 2008, the number of start up businesses was 5,550 - a third less than the same time last year. However, Dunfermline and West Fife has managed to buck this trend by seeing 101 new business start ups for the first quarter of 2008, compared to 65 in the first quarter of 2007.
Commenting, Mr Rennie said:
"Sustaining old and creating new business is key to the success of the economy - and I am delighted that West Fife has managed to avoid the decline in new business start up levels, so creating a stable platform on which we can hopefully build. If we work hard enough and support our local economy we lessen the affects of the economic downturn.
Jim Tolson continued:
"This improvement has been achieved despite a heady mixture of slashed budgets, ill-considered proposals and lingering uncertainty about the SNP's plans for business. And the chaotic reorganisation of Scottish Enterprise hasn't helped new businesses. The business environment in Scotland has been needlessly difficult but West Fife is a great place to do business and the figures confirm this.
