Dunfermline and West Fife MP Willie Rennie has expressed his concern at the news that the contract, which will see the old nuclear submarines at Rosyth removed and decommissioned, will not bear fruit until 2012 at the earliest. Mr Rennie received the news in an Adjournment Debate in the House of Commons chamber this week from the Defence Minister, Derek Twigg.
The debate, which Mr Rennie called, centred on the safety and security of the nuclear submarines at the dockyard, one of which has a hole in the hull, said to have been caused by 'microbial action'.
Speaking after the debate, Mr Rennie said:
"Although it is good news that the subs will be leaving, I am still extremely concerned that these ageing nuclear submarines will be in Rosyth dockyard for another four or five years at least, I want the Government to look into speeding up the process as a matter of urgency.
"Britain's first nuclear sub, Dreadnought, has been in the yard for quarter or a century already how much longer will it be before it is removed?
"The news that one of the subs' has already been holed is evidence that they are wasting away, the sooner these hulks are dealt with the better."
