On the day a special meeting is held to brief MPs on the plans to replace the Forth Road Bridge, West Fife's MP has called on the Scottish Government to prepare a 'plan B' to protect Fife's economy from the crises that would ensue if the new bridge construction was delayed. The briefing is being presented to elected representatives by Transport Scotland.
Local MP Willie Rennie believes that the Government should prepare to take traffic out using the Kincardine Bridge. This Plan B would involve constructing a by-pass for Rosyth and making improvements to the A985 Kincardine - Rosyth road. Mr Rennie believes a by-pass should be a priority in its own right but that it is vital in case the new Forth Road Bridge is not built before the old one comes to the end of its life.
The Liberal Democrat wants to give confidence to local businesses that government is preparing for all eventualities.
Willie Rennie said:
"Whilst local businesses are pleased that progress is being made on the construction of a new Forth Road Bridge they are anxious about the possibility of it not being ready before the old bridge has to close, especially to HGVs.
"We need a Plan B. Building a Rosyth by-pass together with making improvements to the A985 to Kincardine would mean businesses could continue to operate in Fife even if there were restrictions on the Forth Road Bridge.
"It's going to be tight to get the new bridge built on time which makes everyone, including local businesses, very nervous. We must do everything we can to make sure it's built before the old one comes to the end of its life but having alternatives in place is the sensible way to proceed."
