· Urges Fife Council, Babcock and Scottish Enterprise to participate
Dunfermline and West Fife MP Willie Rennie has welcomed the news that the Scottish Affairs Committee will be launching a 'substantial' inquiry into employment and skills in the defence industry in Scotland. The decision was taken in light of the £3.8 billion contract for two new aircraft carriers, which are to be built at Rosyth dockyard.
Whilst the carriers project is expected to bring hundreds of new jobs to the area, Mr Rennie sees this as an ideal opportunity for investment in a long term development plan in Fife.
Willie Rennie said:
"We need to work to ensure that the impact of the carriers being built here is not just temporary. This inquiry will look at the current skills base and the opportunities for associated industries, so is an ideal way to develop a long term strategy for Fife."
