Fife needs a 'carriers skills plan' in anticipation of the massive Future Aircraft Carrier project coming to the area according to Fife MP Willie Rennie, who was speaking in a defence debate in the House of Commons. The carrier project is expected to bring hundreds of new jobs to the area, but Mr Rennie is keen that the Government takes the project as an opportunity for long-term development in Fife.
Mr Rennie also highlighted it as a chance for engagement with local colleges and enterprise companies to increase the long-term benefits and create a lasting skills base.
Mr Rennie said:
"The announcement that a significant part of the work on the new carriers would be carried out in Fife was extremely welcome, and I am interested in seeing Fifers being able to take advantage of this unique opportunity.
"The Government needs to ensure that the impact is not just temporary, and to do that a long term plan needs to be formulated."
