The budget shortfall of the Mines Rescue Service at Crossgates Mine in Fife was attacked today by Willie Rennie, MP for Dunfermline and West Fife in a Westminster Hall debate in parliament. Mr Rennie claimed that the money required to keep the MRS operating is a tiny amount in comparison to the funding for the other emergency services.
The Minister responsible responded by saying that he would look into the possibility of providing the bond necessary for EU funding for the MRS, and said that he would be writing to the mines to request more funding from them. The Minister also agreed to set up a meeting between the Department of Trade and Industry and the Department for Communities and Local Government on the subject.
After the debate, Willie Rennie said:
"This was an excellent opportunity to raise the Mines Rescue Service in the House of Commons with the Minister. The MRS at Crossgates provides an invaluable service, and one that can be transferred to help in so many circumstances.
"The price for keeping it going is minuscule and I was pleased to hear the Minister confirming he would look into the EU bond issue. Rescuing people from confined spaces is an extremely specialised skill and the government should help to maintain this skill."
