Willie Rennie has given his support to a parliamentary Early Day Motion which criticised electricity companies who persist in back charging customers following prices rises. Companies such as Scottish Power, Powergen and nPower are still charging customers on token meters, which can force people into debt without them knowing. These electricity companies serve more than three-quarters of a million customers combined.
The EDM also praises companies such as EDF Energy, British Gas and Southern Energy who have thus far not been back charging their customers. The EDM was tabled in response to a campaign by EnergyWatch and Citizens Advice to stop companies from back charging customers.
Willie Rennie said:
"The fact that electricity companies are back charging their customers like this is absurd, it can drive people into debt without their prior knowledge, which could potentially lead to them incurring further bank charges.
"I have given my support to this EDM having been contacted by many of my constituents who have been affected by this back charging. I would also urge any other constituents of mine who have suffered to get in contact with me as soon as possible. The more people that come forward the stronger the campaign against these charges will be. "
