Fife Council has been criticised for failing to tackle anti-social behaviour in West Fife. Lib Dem MP Willie Rennie and Scottish Parliament Spokesman Jim Toslon are frustrated that Labour run Fife Council is not providing sufficient resources for activities for young people in the evening which is resulting in alcohol fuelled anti-social behaviour.
"The Labour Party talks tough on anti-social behaviour but when it comes to things that make a real difference it is clear that they have failed," said Jim Toslon. "The Blue Light Discos organised by Fife Police and partly funded by the Council are a success but we need so much more and in every community. The Discos have been proven to cut crime levels on the nights they are held and are extremely popular with young people but we need much more than this if we are to tackle the problem of alcohol fuelled ant-social behaviour."
Willie Rennie said:
"When I toured the town with the police young people told me that they hung about the streets because there was nothing better to do. When met young people in Wellwood I was told that the local Community Centre was rarely open for activity for young people. It's a story I hear regularly."
"Fife Council spends large amounts of money on community centres in almost every community in West Fife so why are we not fully utilising these facilities to get our young people off the streets and away from a life of alcohol abuse."
"Rather than spending time talking tough they should get on with providing the support that our young people need."
