A significant reduction in the number of British troops in Iraq would go a long way to alleviating the significant problems caused by overstretch of the armed forces according to Willie Rennie, the Liberal Democrats spokesperson for Defence and MP for Dunfermline and West Fife.
In a Westminster Hall debate today, Mr Rennie backed up calls from Lib Dem leader Sir Menzies Campbell that British forces be withdrawn from Iraq by October. The failing mission in Iraq is causing real problems concerning the retention of personnel in an army which is already under-strength.
During the debate, Mr Rennie said:
"We have reached the conclusion that our troops should complete an orderly withdrawal by the end of October for three reasons; firstly, the continuing instability in the country, secondly the flawed US strategy that we have little influence over and finally the overstretch of our armed forces.
"We must recognise that this commitment cannot be open-ended and that the current strategy is not succeeding. Withdrawing our troops is not only the right thing to do for our armed forces, it is the right thing to do for the Iraqi people."
