West Fife Liberal Democrats have strongly criticised Transport Scotland for refusing to replace the traffic lights in the village with a roundabout. In a letter to Willie Rennie MP, the body responsible for transport in Scotland defended the unpopular lights that have caused a number of accidents since they were installed.
In the response to Mr Rennie's letter, the Chief Executive of Transport Scotland, Malcolm Reed said:
"Analysis of the new traffic flows with the original roundabout junction in place indicated that traffic flows would become out of balance. Traffic signals were therefore considered to be the most appropriate solution."
Commenting on the letter Willie Rennie said:
"These must be the most unpopular set of traffic lights in Scotland. They have caused a number of accidents since they were installed and should be replaced as soon as possible.
"For the approaching driver the sight is very confusing with 28 different sets of lights. It's little wonder there have been a number of accidents. And it must have cost a fortune to have them installed.
"The lights were clearly designed by some enthusiastic light lover, but they must go."
