MP demands action to curb binge drinking culture

January 29, 2007 2:21 PM

Willie Rennie is calling for local nightclubs to do their bit in the fight against binge drinking, which is damaging the health of young adults up and down the country. Many nightclubs in Dunfermline and West Fife offer free drinks on certain evenings after paying a relatively small sum on the door.

Binge drinking not only costs people in health terms, but it can cost local councils thousands of pounds to clear up and the emergency services are stretched to their limits on a regular basis.

Speaking about the problem, Willie Rennie said:

"These offers, such as £12 for entry and then free drinks all night show a degree of irresponsibility on the part of the nightclubs. It will take a concerted effort on the part of all the nightclubs in the area to solve this problem.

"The health of young people is being compromised by this binge drinking culture, and we should be doing everything possible to turn things around.

"I realise the nightclubs want to make money, but we should get our priorities straight in this case. I will be writing to all the nightclubs in the area to press them on this issue."
