There has been a huge response to local MP Willie Rennie's appeal to local veterans to apply for a veterans badge. After only one week over 50 veterans from all over West Fife have applied for the badge. But the MP wants more to come to claim for the badge in recognition of their service to the country.
"There's still time to apply for the badge," said the MP. "I'd like to bring to the attention of all those who served in the UK Armed Forces before December 31, 1969, that they may qualify to receive the badge.
The following service people can also qualify for the badge: Merchant Navy sea-men, Home Guard, Polish Forces under UK command, members of the Cyprus Regiment during the Second World War, Veterans of the Suez Canal Zone (1951-54) as well as war widows of widowers who received a War Widows/Widowers Pension.
Unfortunately, the badge cannot be issued posthumously as it is a survivors' badge, which is to be worn on civilian clothing.
"If anyone feels that they might qualify and would like to make an enquiry for this badge, they are welcome to contact my office.
"There will be hundreds of local veterans who served their country in a variety of ways over the years. This badge is a good way to recognise that contribution and I want everyone who is entitled to the badge to get in touch. The form is quite simple and the process is painless."
