The Marine who heroically went back into a combat zone with three colleagues has today been praised by Dunfermline and West Fife MP Willie Rennie. Gary Robinson, of Rosyth went back into a dangerous area of Helmand province strapped to the side of an Apache attack helicopter with Colin Hearn, David Rigg and Chris Fraser-Perry to recover the body of their section commander, Matthew Ford.
The rescue was thought to be the first of its kind attempted, and was termed a "leap into the unknown" by a military spokesman.
After learning of the rescue, Willie Rennie said:
"I am extremely proud that Mr Robinson is a constituent of mine, he genuinely is a hero and I would recommend him and his colleagues for bravery medals.
"This rescue mission underlines the bravery of our armed forces, the fact that these four marines flew into a combat zone strapped to the outside of a machine capable of flying at almost 200mph is truly remarkable.
"Our armed forces are respected around the world and this latest rescue mission will only enhance that reputation, and rightly so."
