A Health Protection Scotland official is to conduct an investigation into the 42% rise in the number of E-coli 0157 cases last year. Willie Rennie, the MP for the nursery at the heart of one of the outbreaks, has welcomed the probe.
At the time of the outbreak in May Willie Rennie called for a review of the procedures and guidelines. In particular he wanted a review of the guideline that nurseries would only close if there was more than one case, home hygiene, and the size of nurseries.
Commenting on the 42% rise and the probe Mr Rennie said:
"This rise is substantial and needs investigated to make sure that it is not more than just a blip for last year. I'm pleased that Dr Cowden thinks this should be done. I do think we need to have a wide ranging review that covers the issues of home hygiene, nursery size and nursery closure advice.
"The outbreak in the careshare nursery in Dunfermline was a harrowing time for the staff, parents and children involved. We must learn the lessons from that and other outbreaks so that we can get the better of this potentially deadly bug."
