Bill to ban cluster bombs introduced in Commons

December 19, 2006 3:30 PM

A Presentation Bill has today been introduced in the House of Commons which calls for the banning of all cluster munitions. The Cluster Munitions (Prohibition) Bill, was presented by Nick Harvey, the Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of Defence Secretary, and supported by Willie Rennie.

The Liberal Democrats, and Willie Rennie in particular have recently been calling on the government to support an international ban on the use of cluster munitions. The weapons are indiscriminate and continue to litter warzones and endanger civilian populations for years after conflicts have ended.

Willie Rennie said:

"Time and time again we as a party, and individually have called on this government to ban these horrific weapons, but time and time again our calls have been ignored. I hope this Bill will add to the increasing pressure on the government.

"Cluster bombs are an indiscriminate weapon and their continued use is a scar on the conscience of this government. The support of the British government should be added to the increasing calls for an international ban on cluster bombs."
