Commenting on the coroner's verdict today on the death of Sgt Steven Roberts in Iraq, Liberal Democrat Defence Spokesperson Willie Rennie MP said:
"The Government should be utterly ashamed of itself for the appalling failings that led directly to the death of Sgt Roberts.
"Our troops depend on the Government to make sure that they are properly supported and protected and that their equipment is fully functioning, but that trust is not being repaid.
"Ministers were ill-prepared for the war in Iraq and our troops have suffered as a result.
"Not only do our troops not have the equipment they need, but serious shortfalls in manpower have left our soldiers overused and undervalued.
"At a time when army manpower is at its lowest level since World War II, we need to ensure that we have the capabilities to meet our commitments."
