The Defence Procurement Report, issued today by the Defence Select Committee, presses the government to make a final decision on various aspects of the Future Carrier Project. The Project, which could provide security for hundreds of jobs at Rosyth Dockyard, has suffered from numerous delays because of concerns over costs and delays with procurement.
Willie Rennie, the MP for the dockyard and a member of the House of Commons Defence Select Committee said:
"The future of many jobs at Rosyth Dockyard depend on this decision. The Defence Procurement Report clearly sets out the reasons why a final decision needs to be made on the Future Carrier Project.
"Rosyth Dockyard is thriving, the skill set and level of efficiency there are second to none and it is vital that this decision is taken sooner rather than later so as to maintain it."
The Report states that:
"We look to the Ministry of Defence to ensure that negotiations on price are moved forward as quickly as possible so that the main investment decision on the future carriers can be taken.
"Discussions on the Future Carrier programme will be crucial to the future of the UK shipbuilding industry. The programme is a key element of the maritime industry strategy. We will examine the maritime industrial strategy as part of our enquiry looking at the progress of the Defence Industrial Strategy."
