Liberal Democrats in Dunfermline and West Fife are to distribute 30,000 tabloid newspapers to local homes in a new campaign to gather support for the abolition of all tolls on the Forth Road Bridge. Local Scottish Parliamentary Spokesman Jim Tolson and MP Willie Rennie will head the campaign which will ask readers to sign the petition against the tolls and return it to show their support.
Commenting on the campaign Jim Tolson said "It is clear that there is little credible evidence to support the retention of the tolls on the bridge. Even the claims that traffic would increase by 21% if the tolls were removed has been found wanting. I urge all residents in Dunfermline and West Fife to show their support for the campaign by signing the petition. The more support we get the greater chance we have of abolishing the tolls."
Local MP Willie Rennie, who successfully campaigned against the £4 tolls during his by-election win earlier this year, said "The bridge has been paid for and all the tolls in Scotland outside Fife have been abolished so it's time for the tolls to go now. I was concerned about the possibility that congestion would increase if the tolls were removed but I have been unable to find any credible evidence to support that claim. There is a deep sense of injustice in Fife about the tolls - so they should go."
Supporters of the campaign can also join up by writing to Willie Rennie and Jim Tolson at 1 High Street, Dunfermline. KY12 7DL.
