Grassroots campaigners are the lifeblood of local communities, and local MP Willie Rennie wants to nominate the best for a national award. The Sheila McKechnie Foundation has recently launched an awards scheme whereby the best grassroots campaigners in any given area can be nominated by the local MP to attend valuable training days for free.
The support programme for the winners includes one to one coaching on campaign tactics, mentoring from senior and experienced national campaigners and the opportunity to shadow decision makers in their particular field of interest.
Willie Rennie, the MP for Dunfermline and West Fife said of the scheme:
"Campaigners are so very important to local communities and can help make them vibrant for the benefit of all. We have many excellent campaigners here in West Fife but I want to give them a helping hand so they can be even better.
"I am pleased to see charities such as the Sheila McKechnie Foundation engaging campaigners in one-on-one tuition and mentoring, which will only enhance the impact that campaigners across the country will have. It is a great opportunity for someone who is looking to gain valuable campaigning experience.
"I want nominations from local people. Perhaps it's someone who runs a residents or tenants association or a particular campaign group. One of the campaigners for the hospital is a possibility or perhaps a leader against the open cast coal mines at Crossgates or Saline/Oakley. Those campaigning for or against the business school may also wish to consider putting their names forward. There are also endless other possibilities, too many to list here."
