BP backs down in row over under age drinking rules

Following Willie Rennie's tabling of a motion in the House of Commons, oil giant BP has agreed to drop its threat of legal action against Fife council. BP had previously stated that they intended to challenge Fife Council's new 'Challenge 25' regulations, whereby anyone who appears to be under the age of 25 will be asked to provide photographic ID.
Rennie's Early Day Motion criticised BP's statements of intent to take legal action, and urged the company to reconsider its decision, which it has now done. A BP station in Fife recently had its license to sell alcohol revoked after being caught selling alcohol to a person under 18, which had sparked the legal challenge.
After hearing of BP's decision, Willie Rennie said:
"I am very pleased at the decision from BP not to challenge Fife Council. I tabled the EDM in the Commons largely because I think the council's plans on tackling under age drinking seem eminently sensible, and the legal action would certainly have compromised them.
"I would like to praise BP for taking this decision, and doing so very swiftly. The test purchasing scheme by the council was really starting to take effect, and I hope the measures will go a long way to tackling problems of anti-social behaviour and under age drinking in our area."
