The Prime Minister has yet again failed to commit the Government to outlawing the use of cluster munitions. Willie Rennie, the MP for Dunfermline and West Fife grilled Tony Blair at Prime Minister's Question Time today, asking if the Government would be following the advice of the Secretary General of the United Nations and would ban cluster bombs.
The Prime Minister dodged the issue completely, failing to mention cluster munitions in his response even once. The weapons are indiscriminately violent and can litter war zones for years after conflicts have ended, needlessly endangering civilian lives. The Prime Minister preferred to talk about the wider conflict in the Middle East.
After questioning the PM, Willie Rennie said:
"It is unacceptable that the Prime Minister has ducked this issue once again. The use of these abhorrent weapons should be outlawed as soon as possible, to avoid any further loss of life.
"The Government's message on this is extremely confused, one week Adam Ingram is insisting that cluster bombs are essential, the next Hillary Benn, the Secretary of State for International Development is insisting that their use be outlawed.
"It is important that the Prime Minister comes out once and for all either for or against the use of cluster bombs. How many more times can this Government avoid this issue?"
