Local Liberal Democrat MP, Willie Rennie, has criticised Fife Council's Finalised Structure Plan which proposes to put a new Secondary School on the western edge of Dunfermline instead of in the West Fife Villages. The Structure Plan, which covers the period 2006 - 2026, proposes a new school on the western edge of Dunfermline, but Mr Rennie believes it should be built further west to serve families in the West Fife villages.
Willie Rennie said:
"Any new school in this area is obviously welcome as Fife's secondary schools are far too large to serve our pupils well. In fact we have the largest secondary schools in Scotland. It is very difficult to create a high quality learning environment when there are 1700 pupils in one school.
"However, if we are going to build new schools we must build them in the right places. Families in West Fife are sick of having to pack their children off to schools in the centre of Dunfermline every day . The Liberal Democrats and I have been pressing Fife Council for a West Fife Villages School for many years - it is time they delivered."
"I am deeply concerned that the views of the West Fife Villages are yet again being ignored. The structure plan must be amended to include a West Fife Villages secondary school - in the West Fife Villages. Spending several hours a week on a bus travelling to school is something that we must seek to do away with.
