Fife Liberal Democrats, Willie Rennie MP and Andrew Arbuckle MSP, have called on NHS Fife to rule out car parking charges at Queen Margaret and Victoria Hospitals. In a letter to Jim Goldrick, Chairman of NHS Fife, the Parliamentarians called for the development of a sustainable transport strategy to reduce congestion around Fife's hospitals including the development of improved public transport links, but rejected any suggestion of car parking charges.
Willie Rennie wrote:
"I am concerned that proposals to charge for parking, that were successfully defeated a few years ago, may re-emerge. We want assurances that you have ruled out the introduction of parking charges at the two hospitals. Any charges would hit patients and staff alike and would be completely unacceptable especially when no sustainable transport plan is yet in place."
Andrew Arbuckle continued:
"Congestion around our two main hospitals in Fife can be horrendous. Numerous constituents tell me about the difficulties they face finding a parking space or getting to the hospital by public transport. We are pleased that additional parking spaces are being provided at Queen Margaret Hospital and that a transport group has been established to develop a green transport plan. These are welcome developments and must be given time to work. We would welcome the chance to work with you to develop that plan. We would also be happy to help develop discussions with local bus companies to improve transport links to our hospitals."
