A packed audience of local Liberal Democrat members and supporters crowded into the courtroom at Dunfermline City chambers on Saturday night. They gathered to celebrate Willie Rennie's election as MP for Dunfermline and West Fife with a gala "Thank you" dinner.
Nicol Stephen, Leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, addressed the throng as special guest speaker declaring "This is the hottest ticket in town. There is nowhere else I would rather be than celebrating Willie's victory and thanking you tonight."
He congratulated Dunfermline Lib Dems on their spectacular victory and contrasted the Lib Dem's success with the failures of their opponents. To rousing applause Mr Stephen said "Dunfermline and West Fife was a fantastic result for our party right in Gordon Brown's back yard where the SNP evaporated like scotch mist. The Lib-Dems have marched on to further council by-election success in Labour's heartland in Glasgow. And in Moray we beat Labour into fourth place. There we increased our vote and our share of the vote, while the Tories languished in the doldrums. South of the border we beat Labour into third place at the local elections."
The biggest cheer of the night came when Dave Hebert, Convenor of Dunfermline Lib Dems, introduced "Oor Willie". The Dunfermline and West Fife MP thanked his local supporters for their amazing efforts during the campaign. Mr Rennie singled out the five "excellent" local councilors as the bedrock of the campaign. He also paid tribute to the key local activists who had kept the Lib-Dem flame burning for the past twenty five years.
Willie Rennie declared that the political landscape and public expectation had changed dramatically since his election,. He said "People here in Dunfermline and West Fife were fed up with being taken for granted by Labour. They put their trust in me and in the Liberal Democrats. I will not let them down. More and more people are turning their backs on Labour not turning back to Labour."
Peter Barrett, the by-election agent, launched the local party's fundraising efforts for the Scottish Parliament and local Council elections in 2007 with a grand prize draw and silent auction which raised over £2000 sending the eighty-plus strong audience home buoyed up for further success.
