Local MP, Willie Rennie, met with Lexmark's senior management on Thursday in advance of the first job losses at Lexmark. Around 500 employees will be going to work at the Lexmark plant in Rosyth for the last time on Thursday 27th. Lexmark has announced that the plant will be closed by the end of 2006.
Mr Rennie pressed senior management on their job shop and redundancy process. Commenting on the meeting, he said:
"The management took great efforts to explain the details of their redundancy programme and measures to help workers find new jobs.
"Lexmark have been praised by Scottish Enterprise, Careers Scotland and Job Centre Plus for the way they have gone about this process.
"They assured me that they have had a huge amount of interest from Day 1 from other companies wishing to recruit their staff. They told me that over 416 companies, including 139 engineering companies, have come forward offering over 500 positions. In addition, I understand that 28 organisations took part in a Jobs Fair set up by Lexmark and other organisation have offered up to 400 jobs each.
"I must admit that I was impressed with Lexmark's efforts, but what I want to know is if the workers feel they have been treated with dignity and respect in this difficult time. I would also like to hear from them how easy or hard it has been to find new jobs that make use of their valuable skills.
"I would like to encourage employees to contact me to let me know how they have got on. My number is 01383 616136."
