Local MP, Willie Rennie, expressed his surprise this week that the UK Government had not consulted the Scottish Executive, Bear Scotland or Local Councils about the inevitable increase in road freight before making the decision to downgrade Defence Munitions Centre Crombie.
The revelation came in answer to parliamentary questions tabled by Willie Rennie. Armed Forces Minister, Adam Ingrams, confirmed that there would be an increase in road freight due to his decision in February to downgrade DM Crombie. Despite this, he stated:
"No discussions have taken place with Local Councils, the Scottish Executive or Bear Scotland. Following the changes at Crombie, Defence Storage and Distribution Agency Sites in Cumbria and Dunbartonshire will take responsibility for the transport of munitions to training centres across Scotland. The study into the Future Role of Crombie concluded that the increase in the volume of traffic on any one route was insufficient to give concern."
Willie Rennie commented:
"The Minister knows that road freight will increase because munitions previously stored at DM Crombie will now be stored elsewhere. More road freight could mean more congestion and long-term damage to our roads. I am, therefore, surprised and concerned that the Minister did not consult Local Councils, the Scottish Executive or Bear Scotland."
Willie Rennie will be visiting DM Crombie on Thursday 27th April to discuss the implications of the Minister's decision and the future of the Centre.
