For the last 20 years, post offices have been closing at the rate of 300 per year and over 4,000 post offices have closed across Britain since 1997. Now local MP, Willie Rennie, is warning that many local post offices may be under threat. Speaking in a Westminster Hall debate, he said:
"In Dunfermline and West Fife, we have 18 rural post offices, many of which are under threat, including some in former mining communities, like Blairhall and Oakley."
Many rural post offices across the UK will be threatened with closure after Government protection for them ends this month.
Mr Rennie warns that urban post offices may not be safe either, now that the Government has decided to end the popular Post Office Card Account system. The card account is used by over 4 million people to access pensions and benefits.
"Without the valuable custom brought by the Post Office Card Account, many post offices will struggle to stay open. They will struggle to secure the investment they need due to uncertainty about their future viability."
Willie Rennie and Scottish Liberal Democrat colleagues are now calling for the Government to keep the card account system open and extend it in order to save local post offices.
