£4 tolls would not have cut congestion on the Forth Road Bridge. That was the view of the Transport Minister in his detailed letter to the Forth Estuary Transport Authority which has been released this week.
Liberal Democrat, Willie Rennie, was elected in February after campaigning against an increase in tolls over the Forth Road Bridge. He commented:
"Tavish and I agree that the proposed increase in tolls would have done little to reduce congestion and would have penalised many ordinary motorists who have no option but to drive over the bridge. We must work now to ensure that proper public transport alternatives are developed."
Lib Dem MSP and Transport Minster, Tavish Scott, set out his opposition to £4 tolls in a letter to the Labour-controlled Forth Estuary Transport Authority (FETA). He wrote:
"The proposed package will probably not achieve actual reductions in congestion. It will likely only hold the growth of congestion for a period of time. Motorists using the bridge would probably not notice any benefit in journey times or reliability from the proposals."
Willie Rennie is now calling for the debate to move on.
"I am delighted that these crazy toll proposals have been rejected. We must now work together to develop public transport alternatives so that people who work outside the centre of Edinburgh are not forced to use their car to cross the Forth. That is the way to cut congestion."
