Willie Rennie MP has formally objected to the planning application for a new opencast mine near Crossgates. In a letter to Fife Council the Lib Dem MP said that he had concerns about increased traffic, noise, dust and the effect on the Fordell Day Level.
Mr Rennie said:
"During the recent by-election many residents in the area raised their concerns about this matter with me. The proposed development may impact on the Fordell Day Level but will also result in increased noise and dust levels for the residents of nearby Crossgates and Fordell. I am especially concerned about how people with asthma and other respiratory conditions will cope under these conditions.
The local MP said he was also concerned about increased traffic.
"The B981 is currently a very busy road. One resident has already had to rebuild a garden wall on a number of occasions due to southbound cars losing control. I am concerned that a further increase in lorries will put this road under even more pressure. There is also a danger to cyclists using the Kingdom cycleway between Masterton Road and the A921. The possible curtailment of rights of way in the area of the works is another concern that local residents have raised with me."
"Over the years Crossgates and Fordell residents have suffered from opencast mining in the area. They have put up with enough already. I believe that this proposal should be rejected by the Council."
"I have also requested that no decision is made without a full public hearing into the proposed development."
